Four ways to get rid of a junk car
| Option | Best when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Sell to a junkyard or scrap buyer | The car doesn't run and you want it gone fast | You get roughly metal value, minus towing |
| Sell it for parts / part it out | It has a good engine, transmission or body panels | More money, more time and work |
| Sell to a private buyer | It runs, or someone wants a project car | Listing, calls and paperwork |
| Donate to charity | You itemize deductions and the value is modest | The deduction is usually what the charity sells it for |
Scrap it
Fastest and simplest. Price is mostly weight times the scrap price per ton; our calculator gives you a range. You'll need the title, or a car that fits Texas's 13-year no-title rule.
Sell it for parts
If the car died but key parts are good, a used auto parts recycler or a private buyer may pay more than scrap. Pulling and selling parts yourself pays the most, but it takes tools, space and time, and you still have to dispose of the shell.
Donate it
IRS rules matter here:
- If the charity sells your car, your deduction generally can't be more than what it sold for.
- For a deduction of $250 to $500 you need a written acknowledgment from the charity. Over $500, you attach the acknowledgment (often Form 1098-C) and Form 8283 to your return.
- A charitable deduction only helps if you itemize instead of taking the standard deduction.
Whatever you choose
In Texas, file a Vehicle Transfer Notification with TxDMV within 30 days of handing over the car, so the buyer's parking tickets and tolls can't come back to you.
Common questions
What is the best way to get rid of a junk car?
If it doesn't run and you want it gone, sell it for scrap. If key parts are good, a parts buyer may pay more. If it runs, try a private sale. Donating helps only if you itemize, and the deduction is usually what the charity sells it for.
How much can I deduct for donating a junk car?
If the charity sells the car, your deduction generally can't exceed the sale price. Over $500, you attach the charity's acknowledgment (often Form 1098-C) and Form 8283 to your tax return.
Should I sell my car for parts or scrap?
Scrap is quicker. Parting it out usually pays more but takes time, tools and space, and you still have to get rid of what's left.
